Surgery is next Friday. The hospital has an option to take a tour a few days before, and, since we were unable to decide whether this was a good idea for our particular kid, we decided to shift the burden to him, and see what he thought. Which meant we had to tell him tonight.
The kid, he asks a lot of questions, from why his body is the way it is to why it has to be fixed to why he’ll be asleep to how he’ll fall asleep. Finally, he wanted to know, “Why did you tell me this? It would be better if you hadn’t told me.”
I guess nothing he says should surprise me anymore, but I have to admit I was surprised to hear him say that, or at least to express it like that. (Side note: Tonight he told me, a little tearfully, “I wish you didn’t let me choose the Lego fire engine because the ladder is very frustrating.”)
Anyway, he does wish to have the tour. I’m hoping they’ll let us do it on MLK day, since we’ll both be off from work. I am looking forward to this being over.
May it be swift and successful, and may he not be too bothered by it all once it’s said and done.
As my grandmother would say, from your mouth to god’s ears.

Aww. You and G will be in our prayers – and I hope it is quick and routine.
And, despite the occasional challenges it presents, I’m still amazed at how sensitive and brilliant your boy is… what a gift!
I hope he’s intrigued and thrilled by the tour (hey – hospitals are kinda cool….in places) and that he feels better soon.
Gatito how very smart and aware he is. I too hope the hospital tour is successful, hospitals that offer tours for children are usually very attuned to how to make the tour fit the child rather than the other way around.
Hope all goes well, will be keeping all of you in my thoughts
I hope it goes very smoothly and that his recovery is quick and easy. Will he have to stay overnight or can he come home right after?
It’s outpatient, thank goodness!

I am pretty amazed by his reaction!
We struggled with this one with my nearly 4 year old son last fall. we told him only 1.5 days early and were pretty lighthearted about it. For us it worked out since we had to wait 3 hrs beforehand and it was nice that he wasn’t stressed (oh, and i was 38 wks pregnant and a wreck).
tips: dvd player with new video, lots of chocolate for parents during the wait.
in all it went well–he was scared very briefly in the OR. He refused most pain meds afterward and was back to normal really quickly. their tiny metabolism is so quick that they process the anesthesia fast. be prepared for constipation, which was our worst problem–and in the scope of things not a terrible problem to have.
you can email if you have any other questions–but it sounds like Lil G is a slightly different creature. Best of luck to you!!
Thinking of you guys today!
